JAMES FITZGERALD, MA

What is your philosophy in psychotherapy?

I believe that healing stems from clients’ development of insight into how they relate to themselves and others. Through developing insight into the patterns of relating that contribute to their struggles and learning to respond flexibly in times of distress, clients can relinquish problematic patterns and increase their freedom to make decisions that align with the life they want to live and be the person they want to be.

What approaches do you use to help your clients?

My approach to therapy is relational and grounded in psychodynamic and attachment theories. From this foundation, I pull from ACT, mindfulness-based, mentalization-based, and behavioral techniques to meet each client’s unique needs.

What are your areas of expertise and clients you work well with?

My training thus far has afforded me the opportunity to work with a diversity of clients with various concerns. I have experience treating depression, anxiety, trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and personality disorders, and have supported clients with gender and sexuality concerns. I have found that I work well with clients who struggle interpersonally and those navigating early adulthood and identity development.

What’s your therapeutic style with your clients?

My style is grounded in empathy, curiosity, and the recognition that each person is trying their best within the circumstances they have been afforded. I strive to develop a strong, trusting, and collaborative relationship where clients feel safe to explore the mental and emotional processes at the root of their struggles. I often focus on emotional experiences, strengths, beliefs about self and others, important relationships, and interpersonal conflict. My goal is to help clients build understanding of themselves to increase their sense of agency in their given circumstances.

What languages do you speak?

English.
