Vantage Point Center for Psychotherapy has a robust training program for psychologists-in-training. We train students at the practicum, intern, and post-doctoral levels. Practicum and post-doctoral trainees should inquire directly about positions with Training Director, Dr. Karen Miller, drmiller@vppsychotherapy.com. Interns can apply through the APPIC system. To obtain the Training Manual, which includes all of our policies and procedures, please contact the Training Director.
At Vantage Point, we utilize a scientist-practitioner model of training. The internship training program is developmental, experiential, and sequential. We do our best to match our trainees with the type of experience they desire, while also challenging and stretching their growth areas to prepare them for independent psychological practice.
Qualified intern applicants must be enrolled in an accredited, degree-granting professional psychology program (i.e., clinical, counseling psychology). Intern applicants must have their dissertation proposal complete by the time of applying. We highly recommend at least 500 direct service hours of previous supervised clinical experience.
We are currently working under a hybrid model, with Interns working 2-3 days in the office and 2-3 days from home. Interns engage in direct individual and group service, individual and group supervision, didactic seminar training, and supervision experience with our practicum students. Interns will conduct individual therapy for about 50% of their training experience. They will have the opportunity to work with a diversity of people aged 12-80. Interns will work with people of all ethnic, SES, religious, sexual orientations, and gender identities during their time at Vantage Point. They can expect to carry a total client caseload of around 20-25 clients. Therapy at Vantage Point tends to be longer term and is determined by presenting problems and discussions with supervisors and clients as to the best needs of the client. Therefore, treatment can be time-limited or longer-term client's best needs
The internship application review committee is looking for the following qualified interns:

Interns will learn how to use our electronic health records program—Therapy Notes.
We facilitate the development of psychologists who can practice competently and independently in several domains. Our program emphasizes strengthening skills in areas that are relevant to community mental health in the Sacramento region. This includes developing proficiency in conducting individual and group psychotherapy with teens and adults from different sexual orientations, gender identifications, and cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Interns will be proficient in crisis intervention with diverse populations and communities.
The goal of the program is to also help Interns develop specialized experience in one of the following areas during their training if they so desire:
The specific program aims are as follows:
Interns will receive training on conducting initial intake appointments at VANTAGE POINT and will begin conducting intake evaluations early in the training year.
Interns will conduct individual therapy for a good majority of their time. Interns will work with people from ages 12-80, and all ethnic, SES, religious, sexual orientations, and gender identities during their time at VANTAGE POINT. They can expect to carry a total client caseload of around 22-28 for full-time Interns.
Interns have the opportunity to participate in the VANTAGE POINT group therapy program. VANTAGE POINT offers several general and topic/population-specific groups throughout the year. Interns will have an opportunity to lead a group or co-lead with an experienced group therapist.
Interns will receive 2 hours per week of primary individual supervision of their clinical and professional work by CA-licensed psychologists. The supervisor will work closely with the Intern to design an individualized, graded learning experience within the context of the requirements and expectations of the training program. Interns and their supervisors will explore their areas of strength and expertise as well as collaboratively determine areas of professional growth and identify learning objectives for the training year. Individual supervision will include not only discussion of Interns’ direct and indirect clinical service activities, but will also address issues of professional development, professional identity, and professional acculturation to the field. Interns will have the opportunity to receive specialty training in the areas of Eating Disorders and OCD/Severe Anxiety Disorders.
Interns receive 2 hours of group supervision each week for the entire year. The group supervision will be conducted by CA-licensed psychologists.
During group supervision, Interns will discuss clinical work and professional issues, as well as conduct case presentations with the goals of receiving support, feedback, and recommendations from their peers and the facilitator. Interns are also encouraged to use this group supervision to celebrate successes with clients, display examples of good clinical work, discuss professional concerns that impact their work with specific populations or presenting issues, discuss professional development topics, and address matters about the dynamic among the advanced Intern cohort. The focus of this meeting is entirely on Interns’ clinical work and professional development. Interns will be required to present a formal case presentation in the meeting twice a year.
In our program, interns take on the role of secondary supervisors to practicum-level trainees, providing guidance and support under the oversight of licensed primary supervisors. This experience allows interns to develop essential supervision skills in a real-world context.
Additionally, interns participate in a Supervision of Supervision group, where they receive further training in supervision techniques and engage in consultation with peers and experienced supervisors. This dual approach ensures that interns not only gain practical supervisory experience but also benefit from continuous learning and support, fostering their growth as competent and effective supervisors.
This training focuses on increasing Interns' competence in a variety of professional issues and clinical topics, several of which are specific to working with issues such as practice within different theoretical models, practice with a variety of presenting concerns and clinical populations, and ethical and professional development issues. VANTAGE POINT focuses training on issues around diversity and multiculturalism and areas of focus on the center such as Eating Disorders, Trauma, LGBTQIA populations, and Anxiety Disorders.
