Self-care is not just a fancy day spa or a long bubble bath, it's a way of life. And just like how we care for a child, we need to care for ourselves consistently too. As adults, we often forget that we too have needs and wants, and we often put ourselves last. But it's time to change that!
First things first, let's talk about positive self-talk. You know how parents tell kids "You can do it!" or "You're so smart!"? Well, it's time to start telling ourselves the same thing. Don't be shy, give yourself a pat on the back and remind yourself of all the things you've accomplished. You'll be surprised how much better you feel about yourself.
Next up, sleep hygiene. Just like you would tuck a little one into bed at night and make sure that they get enough rest, we need to make sure we do the same with ourselves. No more staying up late scrolling through social media, it's time to put down the phone, establish a bedtime routine and get those zzz's. Trust me, you'll wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day.
Now, let's talk about values and needs. As “doting” parents attend frequently to their children's unique needs, it's time for us to pay attention to ours as well. As we get older, it's all too easy to forget what really matters to us or even what we need, so it is important to frequently remind ourselves. It'll bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment to our lives.
And let's discuss healthy eating and exercise. Remember that old saying, “eat your greens”. Well, it turns out that adults need to listen to their own advice. By eating a variety of colorful foods and incorporating some physical activity into our routines, we can improve our overall physical and mental well-being.
We should also not forget about self-compassion, the frosting on the self-care cake! Just like how we give kids a hug and a say "there, there" when they fall, we should do the same for ourselves. Instead of being our own worst critic and giving ourselves a hard time for our mistakes, let's be a little more like a supportive parent. Recognize that we are human, we all make mistakes, and that it's okay. By practicing self-compassion, we can build a more positive and healthier relationship with ourselves, and who doesn't want that? So, go easy on yourself, give yourself a virtual pat on the back and remember, you're doing the best you can!
In short, improving your relationship with yourself is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life. By prioritizing positive self-talk, good sleep hygiene, an understanding of your values and needs, healthy eating and exercise habits, and practicing self-compassion, you can lead a life that is rich and rewarding. So grab your bubble bath, light some candles and get started on raising your “adult self” with care and compassion.
