Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) in Sacramento

What is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) designed to help individuals face and move through fears that interfere with daily life.

exposure

involves gradually and repeatedly confronting feared thoughts, situations, or sensations until the anxiety decreases over time (a process known as habituation).

response prevention

means resisting the urge to engage in avoidance behaviors or compulsions that typically provide short-term relief but reinforce fear in the long run.

What is ERP Like at Vantage Point?

At Vantage Point, we understand that facing fears without relying on avoidance or compulsions can feel overwhelming. That’s why we take a gradual, supportive, and collaborative approach to ERP.

Treatment is guided by your readiness, with your therapist providing encouragement and structure every step of the way.

We work closely with you to create a personalized fear hierarchy—a step-by-step plan that identifies your fears and ranks them by level of anxiety. This collaborative process helps make treatment feel more manageable and increases confidence and follow-through.

You can also ask your therapist about our group therapy options, where ERP skills are practiced in a supportive setting.

What Types of Exposures Can I Expect?

Your therapist will tailor exposures to your specific needs. These are done gradually, starting with more manageable challenges and building toward more difficult ones—so you can build confidence over time.

Common types of exposures include:

Imaginal Exposure

Guided exercises where you vividly imagine feared situations or outcomes.

Interoceptive Exposure

Practicing and recreating physical sensations (increased heart rate) that are associated with anxiety or panic.

In Vivo Exposure

Directly facing feared situations or environments in real life.

ERP for OCD, PTSD, and Anxiety:

Exposure and Response Prevention is widely considered the gold standard treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Research also supports ERP as an effective, evidence-based treatment for:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Phobias
  • Anxiety disorders

Research

Notably, research by Jonathon S. Abramowitz and others has demonstrated strong outcomes for ERP in treating OCD.
