psychodynamic therapy in Sacramento

What is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is an in-depth form of talk therapy that focuses on how past experiences shape your present thoughts, emotions, and relationships.

This approach helps you explore patterns that may be operating outside of your awareness. For example, someone who rarely feels anger but frequently experiences fear may explore early life experiences to better understand their relationship with emotions.

By increasing insight into these patterns, psychodynamic therapy supports more intentional and fulfilling ways of relating to yourself and others.

Core Approaches Within Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic psychotherapy includes several theories that can be used together to support your growth. Two commonly used approaches are:

Object Relations

This approach focuses on your relationships—past and present—and how they shape your expectations and needs. It explores:

  • What you received (and didn’t receive) in early relationships
  • How those experiences influence your current connections
  • How to build healthier, more satisfying relationships

Self Psychology

Self psychology centers on the development of self-esteem and sense of self. It explores:

  • How early experiences of empathy (or lack of empathy) from caregivers shaped your self-worth
  • How you relate to yourself today
  • How to build a more stable and compassionate sense of self

These approaches are often integrated to support both relational growth and a stronger internal sense of self.
