Chelsea Mackey, PsyD., is a licensed psychologist specializing in working with altered states, psychosis, voice hearing and extreme beliefs. For the past 20 years. Dr. Mackey has focused on bringing compassion focused work and positive approaches into interactions with altered states. She believes in helping clients find what is lovely about themselves, and in so doing, rejuvenating the person to seek out the life they want. Dr. Mackey firmly believes all people can recover from even debilitating experiences and tries to help instill this belief in her client’s own recovery. Dr. Mackey believes therapy should be compassionate, informative and encouraging.

Clinical Approach and Interests/Specialties

Dr. Mackey focuses on psychodynamic psychotherapy and meets with clients individually and also in family work. She incorporates aspects of Compassion Focused Therapy, Positive Psychology themes, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy skills, Attachment-Based treatment, Humanistic psychotherapy, Mindfulness Based treatment, and Spirituality.

Experience and Education

Dr. Mackey completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at University of CA Irvine, her Master’s program in clinical psychology at the University of Indianapolis Athens Greece campus, and her Doctorate at the California School of Professional Psychology Fresno/Sacramento campus.

She completed internships at Turning Point Community Programs, Yolo County Mental Health, and several private practices. Chelsea’s post-doctoral training occurred at two locations: C.O.R.E Medical Clinic where she specialized in dual diagnosis with mental health and addiction, and also a local private practice where she was able to strengthen her foundation of deep individual therapy.

For three years after licensing, Dr. Mackey co-owned and was clinical director of a group practice and post-doctoral training site. Dr. Mackey was the lead therapist at the Sacramento Kaiser Permanente Outpatient Psychiatry Department Thought Disorder Program for two and a half years and created their wrap-around program for treatment of psychosis. While there, she worked on an integrated treatment team that provided psychotherapy, medication management, group therapy, recreational therapy, family support classes, and crisis management for psychosis on an outpatient basis.

Dr. Mackey is a long-standing member of the International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis (ISPS-US) and has presented at 4 national conferences and 2 international conferences. She currently does individual and group consultation with licensed therapists and is a supervisor for interns on working with clients experiencing such. Dr. Mackey currently runs a support group for people experiencing psychosis that has been meeting for 8 years and she previously ran a group for voice hearing experiences for 4 years. She has additionally presented at one of our local psychiatric hospitals, several universities and treatment programs across the country, and taught 3 Continuing Education training’s online with PESI and Zur Institute about treatment of psychosis for required units for therapists towards license renewal.
