Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy at Vantage Point

At Vantage Point Center for Psychotherapy, some of our clinicians are trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy and integrate this approach into individual treatment. IFS is a compassionate, insight-oriented model that helps clients better understand their inner emotional world and develop a more connected sense of self.

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-informed, experiential model of psychotherapy that views the mind as made up of different “parts,” or sub-personalities, each with its own feelings, thoughts, and roles.

Rather than trying to eliminate symptoms, IFS focuses on helping clients understand and relate to their internal system with curiosity and compassion.

At the core of IFS is the idea of the *“Self”*—a calm, grounded, and compassionate inner presence that can lead and support healing.

Understanding Your Inner System

IFS therapy helps clients explore different internal “parts,” which often develop in response to life experiences. These may include:

  • Protective parts that manage daily functioning or prevent emotional pain
  • Reactive parts that show up in moments of stress, anxiety, or anger
  • Vulnerable parts that carry hurt, fear, or past emotional wounds

Rather than viewing these parts as “bad” or something to get rid of, IFS helps clients understand how each part is trying to help in its own way.

What Does IFS Help With?

IFS is used to support a wide range of emotional and relational challenges, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety and chronic stress
  • Depression and emotional numbness
  • Self-criticism and low self-esteem
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Grief and loss
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Childhood attachment wounds
  • Perfectionism and burnout

How IFS Therapy Works

In IFS therapy, clients are guided to slow down and turn inward with curiosity rather than judgment. The process often includes:

  • Identifying different internal parts and their roles
  • Understanding how parts developed over time
  • Building a relationship with protective and vulnerable parts
  • Accessing the “Self” to bring compassion and balance
  • Supporting internal healing and integration

The goal is not to eliminate parts of yourself, but to help your internal system work together in a more balanced and peaceful way.
