About
Dr. Karen Miller, Ph.D., is a dedicated and thoughtful counseling psychologist who has served as the Training Director at VP since 2021, where she has played an integral role in shaping the next generation of clinicians. With a deep commitment to ethical, relational, and growth oriented care, Dr. Miller approaches her work with the belief that meaningful change begins within authentic human connection. She strives to help both clients and trainees find greater balance within themselves, in their relationships, and in the ways they navigate the demands and complexities of life. Her purpose is to walk alongside others, fostering insight, compassion, and the confidence to move forward with clarity and resilience.
Dr. Miller currently focuses on overseeing clinical training and supervision at VP, including the development of the internship program, providing mentorship and consultation to trainees, and supporting a learning environment grounded in curiosity, depth, and integrity. While she remains clinically engaged, her primary passion lies in cultivating thoughtful, skilled clinicians and helping trainees balance clinical rigor with authenticity, self awareness, and sustainability in their work.
Clinical Approach and Interests/Specialties
Grounded in a relational and integrative framework, Dr. Miller tailors her approach to meet the unique needs of each individual. She draws from a range of evidence based and insight oriented modalities, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, mindfulness based practices, attachment theory, interpersonal approaches, and family systems perspectives. Her work is collaborative, client centered, and empowering, with a strong emphasis on helping individuals find balance between insight and action, acceptance and change, while building on their existing strengths.
Dr. Miller specializes in working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, eating disorders, life transitions, grief and loss, self esteem and body image concerns, and career related stressors. She has extensive experience supporting clients through developmental and identity related challenges and is particularly attuned to the nuanced ways cultural, relational, and psychological factors intersect in the healing process.
In her role as Training Director, Dr. Miller is especially passionate about education, supervision, and the ongoing development of clinicians. She is deeply invested in helping trainees deepen their clinical thinking, explore countertransference, and cultivate their authentic therapeutic voice while also learning to balance emotional presence with professional boundaries and self care.
Dr. Miller believes that some of the most meaningful shifts begin within the therapeutic relationship and expand outward into everyday life. She holds that all individuals have the capacity for growth and change and strives to create a safe, collaborative space where clients can explore challenges, understand barriers, and build on their inherent strengths.
Her work emphasizes both insight and action, helping clients identify what is within their control while also cultivating acceptance where needed. She is especially attuned to helping individuals find a sustainable sense of balance between striving and self compassion, independence and connection, and growth and acceptance so they can live more aligned and fulfilling lives.

Past Experience and Education
Dr. Miller’s academic and professional journey reflects a longstanding dedication to both clinical work and education. She earned her undergraduate degree in Theater Arts with a minor in Psychology from California State University, Monterey Bay, where she developed an early appreciation for human expression, storytelling, and connection.
She went on to earn her Master’s degree in Counseling with an emphasis in College Student Services from Saint Mary’s College of California, where she worked closely with diverse student populations, including first generation and veteran students, supporting concerns related to transition, identity, anxiety, depression, and family dynamics.
Dr. Miller completed her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Purdue University in 2019, further deepening her clinical expertise and commitment to integrative, developmentally informed care. Her early clinical experience included work with youth and adolescents in group home and continuation school settings, which continues to inform her appreciation for resilience and systemic influences on mental health.
